Fork & Cork Wine Festival

WOW! What a day! Yesterday, we had friends from home and from VT go to Fork & Cork. It was the perfect afternoon! Good wine, good food, good music, and good company!

The first tent we went to actually had the best wine I thought that we had all day. It was Virginia Mountain Vineyards. In fact, we frequently went back to that tent to get bottles to drink while standing in line at other tents.

Virginia Mountain Wines YUM!

Name: Chardonnay
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay
Price: $14.00
Review: A crisp, clean white wine with an essence of pear.
My Review: I thought it had a little too much acid and it was kind of tannic feeling which probably just means it wasn't balanced. I thought that this was the least balanced of all the wines from this vineyard. I did like the crispness, but that was about all from this one.

Name: Cabernet Franc
Varietal: 100% Cab Franc
Price: $15.00
Review: A medium body red wine with hints of pepper.
My Review: For a red, I thought this was really nice. The tannins were really low and it was overall just a really calm red. I liked that there was a little spice, but that it wasn't spicy. We ended up getting a bottle of this.

Name: Petit Verdot
Varietal: 100% Petit Verdot
Price: $17.00
Review: A red rich in color and structure, full tannins with essences of black cherry.
My Review: This is what their sangria slushies were made out of! It had medium tannins which wasn't my favorite, but I liked the blueberry, violet, cherry, date, and weirdly enough a little banana or something in the scents and taste. While the wine wasn't really my favorite... the slushies were AMAZING. We all shared two of them, unfortunately, we got them and finished them really late in the afternoon and by that time we had stopped snapping pictures! :P

Name: Traminette
Varietal: 100% Traminette (and 100% delicious)
Price: $15.00
Review: An award winning aromatic semi-dry, white wine with a burst of citrus.
My Review: I know that I have tried Traminette before, but recently I have begun to really enjoy this type of wine. The smell was AMAZING. A little citrus and a lot of honeysuckle. We got at least 1 bottle of this yesterday. One of my favorite things about this grape is that it is the closest wine to Conde Villar's Vinho Verde, which is my favorite wine. It is basically Vinho Verde without the bubbles.

Name: Acacia Gold
Varietal: Blend
Price: $14.00
Review: A semi-sweet blend with a pleasing fruity finish. A great picnic wine.
My Review: This was one of the group favorites. It was just the perfect balance of sweet, low tannins, and low acidity. It was a great wine for standing in line at other tents!

Name: Virginia Red
Varietal: Blended Table Wine
Price: $14.00
Review: A unique spicy sweet table wine.
My Review: I've said it so many times that reds aren't my favorite, but I do think that with blends and sweeter reds that they are growing on me! This was sweet, but not overly sweet and not too spicy. A fun fact about this blend and the Virginia White is that they are made from the same grape.

Name: Virginia White
Varietal: Blended Table Wine
Price: $14.00
Review: A uniquely sweet fruity table wine.
My Review: WEIRD and DIFFERENT. These really describe this wine because it was a white wine, but it was made with red grapes and their skins a little bit. It had tannins, but was light and crisp like a normal white wine. I enjoyed this wine because it completely different that any other wines I've ever had.

Crab Cake from Preston's Restaurant &
Squires Blend Wine from Saude Creek Vineyards

The wine description was "A sweet, light, fun blend of Muscadine & Chambourcin, this duo lends a light honeysuckle flavor paired with cherry & raspberry notes producing a natural berry essence; a wine reminiscent of summer nights and youthful days. It was $16 dollars and overall a great bottle of wine! It was a great rose color (the picture has a slight filter on it making it way more orange than it was). Out of the 6+ bottles the group bought throughout the afternoon, this was a big hit with both red and white lovers alike. It was a little sweet, the tannins were super soft, and like the description said the honeysuckle flavor was there, but we all thought it was a lot more present and it was nice! "Youthful days" indeed!!! What a great pair. The crab cake was soft, hot, and delicious! The spices interacted with the wine and calmed down any acidity in the wine and calmed down a little of the cajun spices of the crab cake. They were delectable together!

All of us with the Squires Blend wine!

So which wine was my favorite?
I think it was the Vin de Peche from AmRhein's Wine Cellars. The description was "A delicate flavor of an existing ripe peach with layers of sweetness. Reminiscent of a southern peach harvest." It was a $14.00 bottle and was so good. What I liked about this wine wasn't so much the flavor and the want to just drink this wine, it was what the tasting pourer told us to do with this wine. He said that what he likes to do is heat it up in a skillet and then pour it over ice cream, and honestly, after that I just wanted to go home and try it! I think that it was a good wine by itself, but I think with ice cream or if made into a slushy that it would be AMAZING. I bought a bottle and can't wait to give it a try this week!

Just the gals!!

Oh and we might have found the cutest puppy in the world!
